Au début de l'été 2020, l'auteur, professeur et écrivain, débute l'écriture d'un journal pour témoigner de la crise que traverse son pays, le Liban, où la population manifeste pour la démocratie en pleine crise du coronavirus. Le 4 août, l'explosion de 2.750 tonnes de nitrate d'ammonium dans le port de Beyrouth transforme son texte, qui décrit désormais une ville stupéfiée par la violence.
